Georgia Hosts First International Congress on Palliative Care

On September 22-23, Batumi hosted first international congress ‘Palliative Care in Georgia’.  The congress, which was organized by the Open Society Georgia Foundation (OSGF), aimed at supporting organizations working in the field of palliative care to exchange information and draft future plans.  Each organization reported on their accomplishments and future plans during the congress.

The congress brought together doctors and nurses from palliative care units and hospices operating in Tbilisi, Telavi, Zugdidi, Kutaisi and Batumi.  The congress was also attended by invited guests from Spain, the USA and Armenia, as well as the Health Minister of the Adjara Autonomous Republic, officials of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia and the chairman of the Health and Social Issues Committee of Parliament of Georgia.

It was decided during the meeting to provide state funding for the Transfiguration Convent Mercy Centre in Tbilisi.
